National Technology Day, May 11 2022: History & Significance
Every year on May 11th, the nation celebrates the achievements and breakthroughs of scientists and engineers in the field of technology which have helped India reach the level of technological progress at which it is today. When was the first National Technology Day celebrated?
The first National Technology Day was celebrated on 11th May 1999 commenced by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to honour scientists and engineers. Since then, the Technology Department Board has been honouring them for their innovations every year on the same date.
What is the significance of National Technology Day?
Three successful nuclear tests were conducted on 11th May 1998 at the Indian Army's Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan under Operation Shakti, led by the late-President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The mission was carried out by the Indian Army in collaboration with scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER). These tests marked India's entry into the nuclear weapons arena.
How is National Technology Day celebrated?
Every year, the Technology Development Board announces a theme. The theme for National Technology Day 2022 is An Integrated Approach to Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future. Considering the present day situations, the theme is quite befitting.
On National Technology Day, there is a grand event organized in the country's capital, New Delhi, with the President of India invited as Chief Guest. In this event, scientists and engineers are awarded and honoured for their achievements in their field by the President.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded our nation's scientists and engineers saying "Over the last year, they have worked industriously to fight Covid-19. I appreciate their spirit and remarkable zeal."
