5 Inspirational Indian Women To Remember This Women's Day

The theme for International Women's Day this year is - Choose To Challenge. We can choose to celebrate women and we can choose to question inequality. Every single person's opinion and actions count, so all of us need to collectively come forward and challenge all that is pulling us back instead of forward. This year let's look at ten Indian women who made history by pushing through the gender norms and showing us that we can do whatever we set out minds to.

1. Dr. Anandibai Joshi

One of the first practitioners of western medicine, Dr. Anandibai wanted to provide a safe and comfortable environment for women to get treated. She was the first female of Indian origin to study and graduate with a degree in medicine in the United States.

2. Savitribai Phule

Known as the first female teacher of India, Savitribai Phule started the first girl's school with her husband. She also opened a care center named Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha for pregnant rape victims and helped to deliver their children.

3. Harita Kaur Deol

Harita Kaur Deol was a pilot with the Indian Air Force. Harita became one of the first seven women cadets inducted into the IAF as Short Service Commission officers in 1993. She became the first woman pilot to fly solo in the Indian Air Force, in 1994.

5. Muthulakshmi Reddy

She had a number of firsts to her name: the first female student to be admitted into a men's college, the first woman House Surgeon in the Government Maternity and Ophthalmic Hospital, the first woman Legislator in British India, the first Chairperson of the State Social Welfare Advisory Board, the first woman Deputy President of the Legislative Council, and the first Alderwoman of the Madras Corporation Avvai Home.

International women's day 2023 - choose to challenge. Equity is not just a nice to have; it is a requirement. Famous women personalities suggest it's high time to prioritize gender equity in every society. Inspirational women in India know the difference between justice and equality. We expect great women in India to challenge and defend against prejudice, expose discrimination, and encourage inclusion. Women repress their emotions to prevent discomfort for others. But now the era has changed, we expect women to speak up for their needs and want more women's achievements in India.
